Propel Fitness Journal, Issue 081
When you’re injured, you fixate on the wrong things.
The diagnosis.
The MRI report.
How long it’s been.
Whether your back will ever feel “normal” again.
All real. All out of your hands.
And while you stare at them, the levers that actually drive recovery sit there untouched.
Here are three you control completely.
Sleep
This is where recovery actually happens.
Tissue repairs on sleep. Your nervous system recalibrates on sleep.
Short-change it and your pain sensitivity climbs the next day — measurably.
You can’t rush a tendon.
You can absolutely rob it of the one window it does its work in.
Seven to nine hours isn’t a wellness slogan here. It’s dose.
Load
The most misunderstood lever in the room.
Injured lifters swing to one of two extremes.
Shut everything down. Or push straight through and pay for it.
The answer lives between them.
You have a working range of load your tissue tolerates right now.
Find the top of it. Train there. Nudge it up over time.
Pain sitting at 0–4 while you work? Keep going.
5–6? Modify and proceed.
7 and climbing? Back off and reassess.
The choice was never training or resting.
The dose is the whole variable. Manage it.
Consistency
The best plan on earth does nothing sitting in a doc you opened once.
Recovery is built on ordinary days.
The session you almost skipped. The mobility work that feels pointless in the moment.
Small inputs, repeated, compounding.
Nobody rebuilds a deadlift in a week.
They rebuild it in the sessions they kept showing up for while it was still boring.
The Part You Actually Own
You didn’t choose the injury.
You choose what happens over the next six weeks.
Audit what you control.
Run it. Every day it’s on the list.
That’s the whole game.
